Seattle Spin: January Gala Calendar

Human Interest: Body Body Project, Jan 8th, $25, an exploration of women's body issues.  Don't let the media tell you what sexy is.  Celebrate femininity in all its different forms at this event.  For the ladies, plenty of sisterhood in action; for the guys, better understanding of the challenges facing the other gender in our image saturated society.

Art: Jan 6th, free.  The first Thursday of every month is the big art walk when all of the art galleries change their exhibits and stay open late, and the permanent collection at SAM is free.  Here's the best deal in Seattle: go see a bunch of great art work at no cost and then walk up to FareStart for their guest chef night.  Enjoy great works of art and a three course meal by an A-list chef, all for $16.

Lecture: Gary Hill lecture at the Henry Art Gallery, Jan 6th, $8.  Gary Hill changed the face of video art over the last thirty years. His use of text, speech and image explore the physicality of language and our thought processes.

Museum: Finding your way: Human Navigation, at the Museum of History and Industry, until January 30th, $7.  Some days, it's easy enough just getting lost in the parking lot.  See how the old timers found their way through the woods and over the earth.

Party: Cheat's Lightswitch Party, January 8th.  An all ages party with enough DJs spinning tunes to field a basketball team.

Music: Two antique choices and one perverse.  Cappella Romana will be chanting their way into Seattle on Jan 8th, $22.  Listen to music before instruments.  Baroque Northwest breaks out the lutes and baroque guitars on Jan 8th, $15.  Listening to this almost puts a guy in the mood for some mead wine.  Else, Circus Contraption plays at The Crocodile on Jan 7th, $8.  How many bands do you know that are also acrobats?

Club: Fifty cent beer night at Club Noc Noc, every Monday, must be at least 21 years old (but you already new that.)  If you're not burned out from the weekend, here's the place to go.  The music may be too loud to hear, but you'll certainly feel it.

Show: Laser Pink Floyd at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle Center, times vary, $5+.  This is one of those trips worth taking once.  Expand your mind without the chemicals.

Organization: Northwest Fly Anglers.  There's something about fly fishing that has such poetry of motion.  Enjoy nature and the serenity it offers.  Besides, you know what they say, the worst day fishing is still better than the best day of working.

Three new email newsletters.  See bottom of page for details.

New Year's Resolutions: The most common resolutions: get closer to God; work out, get in shape, and shed a couple of pounds; and finally put a stop to the addictions.  Here's how to make your resolutions stick this time.

Religion:  Seattle First Baptist Church Jazz Sunday.  Worship the Big Guy while bee-bopping to a cool beat.  How often can you get away with wearing your sunglasses and a beret in church?

Get in Shape: Join the Washington Athletic Club.  This is 50% health club, 25% social club, and 25% business club.  Put your body in shape along with the rest of your life.

Beating Addictions:  In the beginning, you're in control, the addiction enhances life, and life is fun.  Near the end, you're definitely not in control, the addiction is no longer fun, and life is miserable.  You know what "it" is - now knock it off.

    New Publications:

Gala Calendar, published once a month.  Plan ahead for the next gala or formal event.  If the only time you put on the evening wear and sparkle is the company holiday party, then you're missing a lot of Seattle.  It seems like the only time the media covers a gala is afterwards, when they're printing the photos of what already happened and describing what a good time you missed.  If you'd like to learn of a great party beforehand instead, then you just might end up as the pretty person in the published photo sometime!  Click here to subscribe.

Single Events, published about once every three weeks.  The old yarn is that it's hard to meet new people in Seattle.  There's actually a lot of fun activities going on that improve your chances of meeting someone of interest, if you know what's up.  The first step is getting out of the house; the second step is knowing what to do - this publication provides the ideas.   Click here to subscribe.

3-Day Weekend, published about once a month.  It's wondrous how much you can do within a 250 mile radius of Seattle.  There's a lot of great geography, activities, views to see, restaurants to dine at, and cute places to sleep in.  Learn about the places and trips that will have you asking for the next Friday off.  Click here to subscribe.
