Seattle Spin: What's Happening in Seattle this Week

Gala: FareStart Night on the Town, October 10th, tickets start at $200.  One of the best examples of social entrepreneurship in Seattle, FareStart hosts its annual gala.  Food, wine, exclusive auction packages, and entertainment from the folks who know food.

Fashion: Fido Fashion Show, Noon on October 8th at Hotel Monaco, presented by the Humane Society of Seattle/King County, free.  Your dog still isn't wearing that tired red plaid print, is it?  You don't want the neighborhood dogs thinking your dog is a dork, so see what's new and in style for your pooch.

Restaurant: Jimmy's 70th Street Grill in Kirkland.  Attached to TechCity Bowl, people seem to overlook this restaurant, since many eateries in bowling allies tend to be just pub-grub.  Rather, Jimmy's is an upscale restaurant worthy of it's own visit with a menu that competes for best value on the eastside.

Music: Inside the Music, October 8th, 8 PM, $5 and up.  Do you ever see the music?  Excite two senses, your ears and your eyes, in this concert.  Listen to Stravinsky, Kodaly, and others matched with art works.

Shows: Circus Contraption presents Frankenocchio, until Oct 16th, $15 and up.  The demented folks at Circus Contraption host a puppet show along a twisted story line.  This certainly isn't the same puppet shows you saw as a kid.

Organization: Skeptic's Dinner, October 5th at Third Place Books, 7 PM.  Don't buy into paranormal claims and think there's a bunch of bunk disguised as pseudo-science?  Then dine with like-minded individuals who want proof before belief.

Dining: Feast at the Market, October 12th, $60.  A progressive dinner through Pike Place Market.  Wander through the market's restaurants trying a sample from each.  So many good restaurants down there, and with this format, you actually get to try them all!  It's worth skipping lunch for.

Concerts: Piano concerts every Thursday at 12:15 PM, free.  The downtown Sherman Clay hosts a series of free concerts this month.  If they gray skies are starting to get to you, this will put some gas back into your tank.

Film: NW Film Forum Grand Opening, October 7th, 8 PM, $10.  The NW Film Forum opens its news facilities with a bash.  Even if film isn't your thing, you'll be tempted to get out your old camcorder and outline some script ideas after you see what the folks have here.

Festival: CroatiaFest, October 10th at Seattle Center, free.  Even if you can't finger Croatia on a globe, doesn't mean you won't have a fun time at this festival.  Music, dance, food, costumes, art, film, and photo exhibits on display.  Certainly a great way to explore a different culture.

Art: Sadaa, Voices of Women, starting October 6th, fee varies.  There certainly is a lot of attention, and stereotypes, of Muslims right now, especially women.  View art knocking out these stereotypes.

Planning Ahead:
Oct 30th, NW Women's Law Center Gala
Dec 4th, Hutch Holiday Gala

The upcoming weather
Check traffic before you leave

Autumn Hiking: With the crisp weather we've been having, now's the time to zip up the fleece and head out for a hike.  Take your camera, plenty of water, and make sure you have a valid trail pass.

Merritt Lake: A 6 mile hike near Leavenworth.  Trail is in good condition, rated easy-to-moderate.  See the colors of the fir, pine, and vine maple with the view of Nason Ridge.  Pack a sack lunch.

Tonga Ridge Trail:  Near Skykomish, a 4.6 mile hike, rated easy.  A lot of great side-trails to view spots and lakes.  There's still some ripe huckleberries along the trail.

Lake Lillian:  Just over the east side of Snoqualmie Pass, rated moderate.  A great hike, stick to the main trail if it's your first time.  Think good weather for a stellar view of Mt. Rainer.
