Family:
Grossology at the Pacific
Science
Center,
starting Jan 27th, free with admission. This is perfect for
elementary school age boys who still think farting is funny.
If it oozes or leaks out of some orifice, they break it down to
the scientific level. You can learn the entire periodic chart
of snot.
Metaphysical:
Extraterrestrial & Interplanetary Communication, Jan 25th,
$10. What? Are the good aliens from planet Nibiru trying
to reach you, and you don't know how to answer? Forget cross
country dialing here. Learn how to communicate along the galactic
level for your own loving consciousness and increasing our own solar
family level of love.
Winter
Party:
Seattle Opera Bravo Winter Gala, Jan 25th, $25. This group
always manages to hit the cool venues in town. It's sort of
the über-crowd sans martini glasses, with performances by the young
artists. Actually, "young" for opera talent just
means someone in their 20's. At these events, it's impossible
for the word "swanky" not to come to mind.
Gala:
FiSHing for a Cure, Jan
27th, $100, a benefit for Muscular Dystrophy. If you still
have a gala left in you after the holiday season, then this one
is worth making. This is one of the bigger and well organized
galas in town. Actually, if you received any new outfits for
Christmas, this is the place to take them out for their first test
drive.
Restaurant:
FareStart opens its new restaurant
in February. Seattle's number one philanthropic restaurant
inaugurates its new facility, opening with a spectacular dinner
from the good folks at Canlis. It's probably a statement of
Seattle nice that, this is the hardest restaurant to get reservations
at, so start planning now.
Wine:
Woodinville
Wine Diva, Jan 24th, $40. These events are always a hoot.
After their second glass, these women go into fits of giggling.
Anyway, it's a tour of Yakima area wineries for the afternoon.
Using a stereotype, wine people tend to be pretty nice people too,
so it's a fun crowd to party with.
Senior
Activity:
Resource Fair, Jan 26th, free. The City of Seattle is
making sure its old people are happy and healthy. At this
fair, there are exhibits and vendors from local businesses, service
agencies, and local government programs with information on products
and services. They even throw in a free lunch to boot.
Music:
Seattle
Presents, starting Jan 26th with the Seattle Symphony, noon
at City Hall, free. This is a weekly series of concerts on
the taxpayer's dime to lift the culture in this town. These
are actually pretty good concerts, but it's too bad they're limited
to City Hall - they need to do a little mini-tour or something.
Health:
Semana has a free health fair,
Jan 27th, 4-7 PM. Continuing the New Year's get healthy resolution,
this health club is hosting a little health fair with chiropractors,
physical therapists, naturopaths, and others to answer your questions,
and help you on your way to a healthier new you in 2007. There's
also free body fat testing to determine if you're officially at
the lard-ass level or not.
Organizations:
African Chamber
in the Northwest, Africa could probably be one of the trickiest
places to do business and not for run-of-the-mill chumps.
It can be easy to be pessimistic on the outlook of Africa and its
possibilities, but this group manages to create (to use an oft phrase)
'win-win' scenarios where everyone benefits.

Natural
Energy Boosts: Forget
the hooky herbs and supplements. Here are the tried and true
methods to get more energy and put a little more spring in your
step.

Napping:
Infants, grandparents and Europeans may be onto something here.
A little power nap during the day can have quantum improvements
on your productivity and health. The napping pros advise taking
a 20 minute nap between 1-3 PM, stay away from coffee and alcohol
during lunch, and turn off your telephone and cell. Now, put
your head down on your desk, and don't be ashamed.
Get
more light: With
the monochrome skies winter, how can one not feel a bit downcast
and lethargic? One easy answer is light bulbs formulated to
emit the hues of natural sunshine, not to mention, those alarm clocks
that start lighting up 30 minutes before the alarm goes off.
Water,
Coffee, and Sugar:
Coffee is a gimmie, everyone's default but try to limit your intake
to 1-2 cups or 1 grande latte per day. Sugar gets a
bad wrap. It has some pluses and minuses, but like anything,
when used in moderation, it's alright. Sugar in cookie form
works best, especially if you opt for a fiber-filled oatmeal cookie.
Water is an overlooked choice, and best of all, it comes right out
of the tap.
