First
Thursday,
at the EMP: January 4th, 5-8
PM, free. This is kinda cool. The museum joins the other museums
in the Seattle area by opening up their gallery for free. If you're
too cheap to pop the couple of bucks to see what's inside, then
this is the way to go.
Music:
Seattle Jazz Vespers, January 7th, free. These guys almost make
it impossible not to go: cool music, free admission, no ticket hassles,
casual dress welcome, the environment of a cool gothic church, refreshments
afterwards, and free parking to boot. It's actually a good way to
start a work week.
Women's Interest:
Modern Women's Self-Defense Workshop, starting January 2nd,
$275. Boy, can you just imagine being the male volunteer for this
class, the guy wearing that big red foam protective suit who gets
kneed in the nads for practice by every woman in that class? Anyway,
it's a great class for the women - better not screw with them when
they're done with this class, though.
Horticulture: The
UW Botanical Gardens starts to come out of its winter slumber. On
the first and third Sundays of the month, at 1 PM, they have a free
tour around the park, focusing on whatever is in season at the
moment, kinda like the chef's special. They also have
story time for the kids on January 6th, 10 AM, free, and they're
starting up their
winter adult education courses. Everyone drives past 'em on
520, so here's the chance to see what the place is about.
Film:
Meaningful Movies, January 5th, by donation, showing Impeach Bush and Cheney this week. With such rhetoric, it's
hard to tell if this is just a war cry to bring the anti-Bush faithful
together, or if they actually think they've got a pipe-dream of
making an impeachment happen. Anyway, one way to tell would be to
actually go. * Also,
Black-Eyed Blonde, starting Jan 5th at Unexpected Productions,
$10. Actually, it's not a film, but inspired by the 1940's film
noir genre in comedy improv form. The audience feeds the plot suggestions
before the show. * Also, It's
a Wonderful Life with Karolyn Grimes (Zuzu), Jan 6th, $11. Would
this be kinda like seeing the Nutcracker after the new year? It's
not quite on the same level of the Wizard of Oz, but it's still
a movie you enjoy seeing again, anytime of the year. Go hear about
her 15 minutes of fame and see the movie once more.
Kids: Toy
Swap, Jan 5th. Of course, the timing on this couldn't be any
better. Swap out the old toys your kid no longer plays with for
something else, preferably better this time.
Class: Pet First
Aid, Jan 6th, 12:30 - 4:30 PM, at the
Greenwood Senior Center. Ever read one of those slow news day
stories of Fluffy passing out and the pet owner performing CPR to
bring the dog back to this side? Anyway, not sure if they'll go
into that level of aid, but you will learn how to take care of your
pet and respond when your little precious begins to ail. * Also,
Knit a Scarf,
Jan 6th, $20. It's kind of a dopey project, but hey, you gotta start
somewhere, and it's still fun in a kitsch sort of way. * Also,
Nutrition For Dummies at Kirkland Library, Jan 6th, free. If
eating better is part of your New Year's resolutions, here's where
to begin. Safe to say that soda pop will not be provided as a refreshment.
Lectures: Battle
Of Midway, Jan 6th, free, video and a tale from a veteran who
was there. * Also,
Clean Election Fun, Jan 5th, $5. Everyone carps about how polluted
the election process is, so here's a discussion on the impact of
publicly funded elections as a possible solution.
Nature:
The Birds of Blustery Beach, Jan 6th at
Discovery Park, 2-4 PM, free. If you believe what the pollsters
say, supposedly more people in the US enjoy birding than sex. So,
like, go see what all of the fuss is about. * Also, the
Center for Urban Horticulture has
The Flora of Seattle in 1850, Jan 4th at 7 PM. Learn
what our area looked like before we paved over everything.
Organizations:
The Australian / New Zealand American
Society, Seattle Chapter. These expats all get together and
then reminisce over how good life was in the home country. Go share
culture, food, and sport of those who do truly come from down-under.
Then, tell them how baseball is better than cricket.

New
Year's Resolutions:
The most common resolutions: get closer to God; work
out, get in shape, and shed a couple of pounds; and finally put
a stop to the addictions. Here's how to make your resolutions
stick this time.

Religion:
Seattle First Baptist
Church
Jazz Sunday. Worship the Big Guy while bebopping to a
cool beat. How often can you get away with wearing your sunglasses
and a beret in church?
Get in Shape:
Join the Washington Athletic Club.
This is 50% health club, 25% social club, and 25% business club.
Put your body in shape along with the rest of your life.
Beating
Addictions:
In the beginning, you're in control, the addiction enhances life,
and life is fun. Near the end, you're definitely not in control,
the addiction is no longer fun, and life is miserable. You
know what "it" is - now knock it off!
